9 meaningful projects for the 9 days

Small, soulful ways to create with care — even in quiet times

The 9 Days leading up to Tisha B’Av are meant to feel different. They ask us to slow down, look inward, and think about what’s missing — in our world, in our people, and sometimes even in ourselves.

But “quiet” doesn’t mean “empty.” As designers and creatives, we can use this time to create meaningfully — gently, intentionally, and with heart.

Here are 9 projects that let you stay creative while honoring the tone of these days:

1. Design a comforting pasuk poster
Choose a pasuk from Eicha, Tehillim, or something personally meaningful — and design a soft, contemplative poster around it. This can be digital, hand-lettered, or even embroidered.

2. Build a Beis Hamikdash model (with siblings or kids)
Use cardboard, paper, or recycled materials to create a visual interpretation of the Beis Hamikdash. It doesn’t have to be perfect — just purposeful.

3. Create a visual storyboard of a churban scene
Use illustration, collage, or even a simple slide deck to tell a piece of history visually. Great for animation students too.

4. Make a memory collage for a grandparent
Gather photos, handwritten notes, or artifacts from family history and design a digital or physical collage as a keepsake.

5. Write and design a mini gratitude journal template
Even in mourning, there’s room for gratitude. Create a journal layout that others (or you) can use to jot down small moments of light.

6. Animate a tefillah or kinah line
Keep the style slow, minimalist, and reverent. This is a beautiful exercise in listening to language and honoring rhythm.

7. Design cards for a chesed organization to use post–Tisha B’Av
Make blank encouragement cards, thank-you notes, or “thinking of you” templates for organizations to send out after the 9 Days.

8. Create a family tree poster or interactive web page
Design a simple family tree to gift to a grandparent, parent, or child — include photos, names, and fun facts. It’s a celebration of continuity.

9. Hand-letter a line from “V’liYerushalayim ircha…”
This part of davening takes on a new dimension during the 9 Days. Bring it to life through gentle type — pen, Procreate, or vector, your choice.

Remember:
You don’t need to finish all 9. Even choosing one of these can shift the tone of your week — from passive mourning to mindful meaning.
