Windows 8: Is it too cool for you?

Windows 8: Is it too cool for you?

For us design people, Windows 8 looks like designer heaven. With the cool, colorful, modern looks it looks great, but the real question we all have, will it work great too? For those of you on Windows, do you all remember when Windows Vista came out, it looked super cool, with its new updated look from Windows XP? Well that coolness sure hid a rotten inside. Many of our students that had bought computers running on Vista had major problems with the Adobe software. So I deduced from there that design and Vista do not mix. Lesson to self, not all that glitters is gold!

Anyways getting back to Windows 8. Should you, or shouldn’t you make the leap?

According to User interface design guru Jakob Nielsen, the starting screen is extremely confusing to even experienced users. The first problem is that there is no start button. Now that is a real problem, since Windows users have been used to that for a long time. Instead there are the Charms, which include the cor functionalities within each of them. Some examples are Search, Start and Share to see more details on Charms click here

One great feature ironically, is the ability to use Windows 8 the familiar Windows 7 way. Now, how cool is that (insert sarcasism here). You can access the Windows 7 look through the app called Desktop. Many legacy programs, and some advanced Windows configuration tools, will launch into the Desktop. It still has Charms and recent-apps bar access, though, so it’s quite easy to jump between the two.

My opinion is that wait until it becomes more stable, or wait for Windows 9. The common consensus is that one thing Windows is good about, is correcting any bugs. Here is to coolness that works
